Shades of 2002/03 season
Yeah, I know that it's still very early days but I'm just getting a bit of déjà vu at the moment with the 02/03 season... I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

We finished 7th in 01/02 and the tight-arse board failed to improve significantly enough on the squad the following summer.

We had an abundance of quality attacking players in 02/03 but, for all of their efforts and the goals that they scored, they were let-down by an arsewiping cunt defence - Dailly, Repka and Gary fucking Breen all being absolutely fucking hopeless... Sound familiar, so far?!

If you take away the awful cunt defending Vs Watford and WBA; we would've won both games with the goals we scored (and we could've bagged a couple of more ourselves).

Fortunately, it's still very early days...

But what should we do to turn things around quickly?!

Who in defence should be dropped?!

Should anyone else be dropped?!

What formation should we be playing?!

Oh, pagan gods! Save us from thy ye olde relegation zone!

Unlike those days the team has goals and once the defensive problems are ironed out (which they will be) I am sure we will kick on.

I don't think we need to panic but yesterday was a confusing and erratic defensive display which has me stumped.

Overall I agree with the OP though Bilic is no Roeder IMO.

I'm not sure we did had an abundance of attacking players. I'm sure Ian Pearce was up front at times and Kanoute was an earlier version of Sakho with not being right in the head.

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
the defending is certainly reminiscent...

as is the fact that every time some cunt shoots against us they score.

As is the fact that we probably weren't really good enough to have finished 7th the previous season so people thought we were better than we were

luckily, I don't see bilic doing a roeder or payet doing a di canio. We've still got enough about us.

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
the other parallel of course is that the support and the club were at loggerheads

Of course Bilic is no Roeder.

He has a brain and a personality, for a start.

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
We did not have an abundance of attacking talent in 02/03. We played Ian Pearce u front out of desperation as we went into the season with 3 forwards. Though I'll never get why Sinclair wasn't given a run up front.

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
Paolo Di Canio (although he was injured a lot (or exiled by Roeder)), Freddie Kanouté, Jermain Defoe, Joey Cole, Trevor Sinclair... Plenty of flair and goals there.

In any case, we should never have gone down with the squad that we had.

I said during the summer when everyone was wanking themselves stupid 'remember glenn roeders second season'

50 shades of Christian Dailly's hair.

50 shades of Roeders faux leather jacket.

50 shades of Gary breen.

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
There are a lot if differences too! We have a far better Manager. We have several far more experienced players, so are not relying on lots of promising youngsters. We have a far more in depth squad. Hopefully we don't lose an entire front line to injury for a long time, as we did then! Our star player, Payet, isn't as crazy as PDC was & is unlikely to go AWOL! Other than this, it is the same!

Too much squad depth to compare it to 2002/03.

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
The single biggest factor in that relegation was lack of cover upfront. Kanoute got injured early on and we had nobody to lead the line.

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
Kanoute had a ''Ramadan Back'' injury that year where is Sakho ?

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
I've been saying this myself. Not so much a like for like comparison of players, more so the belief that we're too good to go down and our precarious position early on leaves us having to claw back points meaning that equalling or bettering last season is highly unlikely.

The Ghost of Braderz 10:07 Mon Sep 19
Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
Didn't Ian Pearce play up front once in 2003? I may be inaccurate because I would've been young but, if so, I'd say we're miles away from that state.

Re: Shades of 2002/03 season
More like the post FA cup final season, where there was lots going on off the pitch, and it took us a long time to get going.

"We finished 7th in 01/02 and the tight-arse board failed to improve significantly enough on the squad the following summer."

So it's nothing like the fucking 02/03 season then is it?
